Down memory lane

The school was founded by twelve British Steel Companies under the banner ISCON (INDIAN STEEL CONSORTIUM) and the metropolitan of India under the caption “Durgapur Steel Projects” in accordance with the Resolution to provide education for children whose parents were employed with ISCON in Durgapur.  The school opened humbly in 1956 under the name of ISCON primary school and property is vested with the Durgapur steel plant from its very inception till date. In 1965, the school was handed over to the British Methodist Church in Durgapur under Rev. Alan Stephens, who was presbyter, while Mrs. Joan Stephens held fort as principal till the family left permanently for the United Kingdom.

In 1970, six church denominations came together to form the Church of North India in 1972, the diocese of Durgapur was created. As per policy of C.N.I, it was resolved that ISCON school, Durgapur be brought under the control of the diocese of Durgapur church of north India with the Bishop of Durgapur, as Ex-Officio chairman. With the transfer of ownership, ISCON primary school, was renamed Benachity Primary School. Since then the school has grown into a “High School”.

As per the constitution of the school , the Diocese of Durgapur C.N.I , shall act as the Founder Body. Thus , the school is owned, managed and controlled by the Diocese of Durgapur, as a Christian Minority Institution, within the meaning of Article 30, of the Constitution of India and within the meaning of section 2(g)of the National Commission for Ministry Education Institutions Act 2004. The Founder body, Diocese of Durgapur at it’s Executive Meeting held on 30th October , 2004 resolved that Benachity High School be re-named as ST. PETER’S SCHOOL, housed at MIRABAI ROAD DURGAPUR-713204.
